Abstract

Proposing a sustainable resort paradigm for a region known for its natural beauty and grappling with tourism challenges, this study aims to harmonize modern amenities with vernacular architecture. By minimizing excavation and landscape disturbance, engaging the local community, and utilizing indigenous materials, the design seeks to contribute to responsible and culturally sensitive tourism development in the area’s stunning landscapes.

Thesis Statement

This thesis proposes an ecologically sensitive and sustainable design for a Chikmagalur hill resort. Focused on minimizing excavation and preserving the natural terrain, the innovative use of excavated soil for rammed earth walls showcases a commitment to sustainable construction. Incorporating indigenous materials like Indian teak and bamboo supports vernacular architecture and the local economy. This research advocates a holistic and environmentally friendly approach to resort architecture in the naturally beautiful setting of Chikmagalur.
The site is located in a seismic zone with moderate seismic activity. However, the site is not prone to any major natural disasters such as floods or landslides. Overall, the topography of the site offers great potential for the design of a resort that takes advantage of the natural landscape and offers guests stunning views of the surrounding area.

Challenges

Developing a sustainable hill resort design in Chikmagalur faces challenges like minimizing landscape disturbance, ensuring environmental responsibility, balancing economic development with cultural preservation, and addressing landslide and earthquake risks. These hurdles demand a holistic approach integrating environmental stewardship, community engagement, and
resilient engineering solutions.

Findings

The envisioned outcomes of this comprehensive thesis are characterized by a harmonious integration of sustainable design principles, cultural preservation, and a commitment to community well-being. At the culmination of this research, we anticipate several tangible and intangible results that collectively contribute to a transformative vision for hill resort development in Chikmagalur.

Sustainable Construction Practices:

The resort, utilizing excavated soil in rammed earth walls, showcases sustainable construction practices, aiming to inspire ecologically responsible methodologies in future regional projects.

Cultural Integration and Vernacular Aesthetics:

Through indigenous materials and vernacular architectural elements, the resort aims to seamlessly blend with its surroundings, becoming a cultural landmark that celebrates and preserves the unique identity of Chikmagalur.

Resilience to Natural Hazards:

The resort ensures structural resilience against landslides and earthquakes through retaining walls and seismic- resistant standards, prioritizing occupant safety amid the region’s geological challenges.

Model for Responsible Tourism:

Aspiring to be a model for responsible tourism, the resort combines sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement, setting a precedent for future developments that prioritize environmental preservation and the well-being of residents and visitors.

The envisioned results embody a vision where the resort serves not just as a leisure destination but as a catalyst for positive change, fostering a sustainable and mutually enriching relationship between tourism and Chikmagalur’s natural and cultural heritage.
