Rajat’s journey into the world of architecture was marked by significant stints with some of the industry’s brightest minds. He honed his skills at the Patrick Schumacher Studio with Zaha Hadid Architects in London, focusing on the intricate realm of semiological architecture and urban planning. His valuable experience extended to urban design under the guidance of Architect Hafeez Contractor in Mumbai, working on the prestigious Amaravati project in collaboration with Fosters and Partners in London.
During his tenure, Rajat’s design research pursuits delved into “agent-based parametric semiology,” a novel approach that explores the symbiotic relationship between the built environment and its communicative capacity. This innovative perspective asserts that architecture’s social functionality is deeply entwined with its role as a Semiological encoded field, shaping and guiding societal interactions.
In 2020, Rajat co-founded MakeSpace Architects alongside partner Naina Reddy. Armed with degrees from the Architectural Association School of Architecture and experiences gained in London, they embarked on a journey to establish an experimental studio in India. The colourful plates embrace a clean, zen-like design, harmoniously blending the hues of nature with the warmth of family relationships, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Opposite the mirrored glass, bougainvillaea plants add a touch of natural beauty that evolves with time.
The informal living room with a mix of vibrant and subtle hues creates an inviting atmosphere, perfect for a lively family with young children who can freely enjoy the soft-edged furniture. The elegant Italian sofas and chairs add a touch of sophistication, while the exquisite chandelier and lighting fixtures illuminate the space with a blend of contemporary and classical charm. The hand-painted artwork adds a unique and artistic touch to the room, enhancing its beauty and appeal. The Thassos white marble flooring runs seamlessly throughout the entire house.
The dining area emanates a sense of calmness and simplicity. The centrepiece of this space is a beautiful oakish and light wood dining table, exuding an air of elegance and simplicity. The walls are adorned with birch wood cladding, offering a warm and inviting ambience. The minimalistic approach to the decor allows the focus to rest on the show-stopping element of the room – a striking and meticulously designed rug that ties the whole space together. Jute sheer curtains offer a picturesque view of the lush green backyard. The subtle Indianization touches, like the dropping chandelier and suspension lights, subtly enhance the room’s charm. The functional kitchen behind the wooden cladding completes the dining area.
The office complements the minimalistic theme flawlessly. The jute-knitted wallpaper serves as a soft and sophisticated backdrop for virtual meetings, creating an aura of elegance without overshadowing the speaker. The contemporary chandelier provides ample light for a conducive work environment. The subtle wall shelving allows the members to personalize the space with books and cherished belongings.
Complemented by grey Italian marble flooring, this room stands as a testament to the perfect harmony of artistry and purpose.
Study area nestled within the same room, yet distinctly separate. Adjacent to the bed, a continuous rug extends gracefully towards the in-room study space, thoughtfully designed for both studying and doing office work. The study area with a sleek metal and wood table is strategically placed in the corner which has enough natural sunlight.
The bedroom focal point is the rich and warm rust-coloured bed with green-coloured birch ply in the backdrop providing a sense of texture and depth. The wallpaper complements the room splendidly, with its fascinating hues cleverly incorporated into various elements. The rust tone gracefully accents the bed, while shades of green find their way into the backdrop, lamps, bedsheet, and curtains. A window on one side of the bed offers ample natural light.
The guest bedroom on the ground floor embraces a very contemporary English approach with an essence of minimalism. The side tables beside the bed complement the overall minimalist theme. A tall mirror in one corner enhances the space by reflecting natural light and creating an illusion of spaciousness. A big window floods the room with abundant natural light. The console below the window has been thoughtfully designed to be of a shorter height, ensuring it does not obstruct the flow of natural light or the enchanting view of the greenery outside.
In one corner of the room, a cosy corner awaits, featuring a Ligne Roset-colored chair kept atop a beautiful carpet adorned with a charming flamingo print. Designed with care, this serene corner provides the perfect spot for the mother to relax and keep a watchful eye on her daughter at all times.
An exquisite round mirror in the foyer adorned with scaled wallpaper offers a glimpse of the lush greenery outside, instantly connecting the interior to the natural beauty beyond. Glass window on one side of the foyer amplifies the connection to the outdoors. A thoughtfully placed brass table with a glass top adds a minimalist touch. Shades of green and blue, representing the lush flora and the sky, respectively, create a visual continuity that flows seamlessly throughout the space. A large blue planter adds a burst of colour that complements the surrounding hues.
This section of the drawing room boasts a formal setup with a consistent colour scheme with rugs and a coffee table. With the same chandelier gracing both areas, the living space achieves a harmonious balance between formality and informality. A tall black floor light in one corner illuminates the space, complemented by four art frames on the walls. The formal sofa adds sophistication, while a beautiful copper-coated table enhances the ambience. The French window and glass window provides ample natural light and cross ventilation, highlighting the lush greenery outside. The white sheers add a soft touch to the space, enhancing its tranquil atmosphere.
A staircase, accompanied by a small, custom play area for children underneath blends functionality and creativity seamlessly. The staircase features wooden planks painted in black, offering a contemporary and floating effect. The play area is thoughtfully padded to ensure the safety and comfort of the little ones, while birch ply edges encase the glass, creating a wardrobe for storage and keeping the space tidy.

The master bedroom, on the right-hand side of level one, boasts a vibrant green backdrop and a striking red and green carpet, creating a visually stunning environment. The room features a vibrant red and green carpet and a green wallpaper complementing the colour theme. Handcrafted artwork in red colour is placed in a way to break the symmetry within the house. A floor-to-ceiling glass offers ample ventilation and serene views of the outside surroundings. A window behind the bed ensures cross-ventilation in the room.
The reading area adjacent to the main room beckons with its seamless transition, where the enchanting green wallpaper flow creates a sense of unity. Beneath the feet, the wooden flooring adds a touch of warmth and sophistication. Indulging in the exquisite beauty of Ligne Roset, this inviting space boasts a beautiful rug and a luxurious rose armchair. Adorning the green wall are captivating paintings, gracefully depicting women immersed in conversation, solitude, and reading.
A piano in one corner of the bedroom with carefully selected artwork catches one’s eye. Meticulously hand-knitted baskets, also referred to as ‘Tokri’, adorn the wall adding a touch of elegance to the room, complementing the wood elements of the piano. Real plants placed near the piano infuse the space with a refreshing sense of nature. Natural light gently bathes the room from a beautiful window on the right side, inviting the warmth of the sun to illuminate the space.
The daughter’s room is delightfully designed with shades of soft pink and pristine white. The daughter’s fondness for owls is beautifully captured on the wallpaper adding a touch of personalization to the space. A single bed can be expanded and transformed into a queen bed, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the daughter’s growth and changing needs. Ample storage is provided in the room to store all of the daughter’s cherished belongings.
